Duo Matthias Well & Lilian Akopova
“Matthias Wells’ violin playing never becomes tacky, kitschy or schmaltzy, because he takes every piece, every phrase and every volte-face of this musical selection seriously, without weighing it down with human or technical difficulties. As a result, nothing sounds “mastered”, but everything sounds attractive and animating. You can learn here what it means to make music sound airy, weightless and yet precise and serious in the noblest sense. Lilian Akopova’s gripping rhythmic elasticity and her pianistic punchline confidence are a perfect match. <…> most enjoyable musical tightrope walking and brilliant acrobatics <…> without a double bottom. ” says Harald Eggebrecht, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Oct. 29, 2022.
The duo Matthias Well & Lilian Akopova has been performing since 2016. They gave their first concert on Lanzarote in front of a sold-out house. And even then, as now, the critics were unanimous: “Their performance fascinated the audience so much that they extended their performance by half an hour with encores and received a standing ovation.” (La Voz de Lanzerote, Oct. 19, 2016). “The applause was never-ending, so the musicians had to return to the stage again and again to delight the audience with several encores.” (Traunsteiner Tagblatt, March 22, 2024)
In 2018, they made their first major appearance in the traditional Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz, the former audience hall of the Bavarian King Ludwig I , grandfather of the fairytale King Ludwig II. Since then, they have often performed together, including as studio guests live on the NDR Kultur à la Carte program in November 2022, where they presented their album Jazzissimo, released shortly before. This was promptly nominated for the Opus Klassik in June 2023.
The Franco-German violinist Matthias Well, son of the famous Bavarian cabaret musician Michael Well (Biermösl Blosn), was born in Munich in 1993 and began his musical education at the age of five. This was shaped above all by the violinist Kirill Troussov, master classes with the violin virtuoso Julia Fischer and the world-famous Canadian violinist James Ehnes. In 2017, Matthias Well received the “Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis” in Hamburg. In the same year, his debut album “Funeralissimo was released. The CD met with a great response in the German media and was included in the top 20 of the German classical music charts. Wells’ concert activities have taken him around, not only in Germany, but also abroad, including Asia, Africa, Oceania and Eastern Europe.
